Hash & Checksum Generator

Computes the SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512 hash of a text or a local file using crypto.subtle.digest(), with the result in HEX and Base64, a secure comparison against an expected hash, and SHA-1 available only as a compatibility option with a visible warning. The file is never uploaded to any server; a simple hash is no substitute for a specialized password-storage algorithm.

  3. Optionally compare it against an expected hash

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this tool to store user passwords?
No. A simple hash (SHA-256 or similar) is no substitute for a specialized password-storage algorithm (like bcrypt or Argon2), which add salt and deliberate computational cost.
Why does it include SHA-1 if it isn't secure?
Only as a compatibility option for legacy systems that still require it, with a visible warning that it shouldn't be used in new applications.
